The Wear Orange, Jackson: Gun Violence Awareness event is happening Sunday, June 9 at 6:30 p.m. and is taking place at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center at 1107 Adrian St.
The purpose of the event is for City officials and law enforcement to engage with the community in a conversation about what can be done to stop gun violence in Jackson, along with information about Group Violence Intervention Programming.
Group Violence Intervention (or GVI) is a strategy that several communities have adopted to successfully curb gun violence, by directly targeting offenders with a community-based approach. The Jackson City Council is currently considering adding a GVI program for Jackson.
Mayor Derek Dobies goes into more detail about what GVI is in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeEwrMsf82Q&t=54s
