To kick off the 2013 Toastmasters Humorous speech contest season, champion Brian Perdew will once again amuse local Toastmasters with his award winning speech, “The Menopause Express”. Given from a man’s point of view, Brian takes his audience on the menopause express roller coaster ride, an unpredictable experience that many of us can relate to. Brian is also offering tips that day on how to craft a humorous speech at the Jackson Chamber Toastmasters club meeting on Wednesday, July 17th. The Jackson Chamber Toastmasters meet on Wednesday mornings from 7:10-8:25 a.m. at the Jackson County Tower Building, 120 West Michigan Avenue in downtown Jackson. Doors open at 7:00 a.m. The public and other local Toastmasters are invited to come enjoy the presentation.
Brian Perdew is a Jackson native and a member of the Power Toastmasters Club. He won the District 62 Humorous Speech Contest in 2012. Brian reached the championship finals after winning his club, area, division and finally the district competition which encompasses most of the State of Michigan.
“Competing in the 2012 Humorous Speech Contest turned out to be one of the greatest learning experiences I’ve had!” said Perdew, “It reinforced how supportive the Toastmasters clubs are and how everyone wants you to succeed.”
Speech contests are a Toastmasters tradition. Each year thousands of Toastmasters compete in the Humorous, Evaluation, Tall Tales, Table Topics and International speech contests. Competition begins with club contests and winners continue competing through the area, division and district levels. The International competition has two additional levels — semifinal and international. Speakers deliver five- to seven-minute speeches on a wide-array of topics, and are judged on content, organization and delivery.
Beginning in August, the five Jackson Toastmaster clubs will hold their humorous speech contests in order to send one winner each to the area contest on Thursday, September 19th. Brian’s tips on how to give a humorous speech will inspire, inform and empower our newest Toastmasters club members to step out of their comfort zones and to compete.
