A Road to Recovery for All

Drug addiction happens in families in all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life. It doesn’t happen in a vacuum or on an island. It impacts the entire family. Substance abuse and addiction has been implicated in an increased risk of child abuse. Subsequently, children of abuse have been shown to have greater rates of substance use disorders later in life. Paired with the fact that a child of an addicted individual may already face increased rates of addiction, this detrimental environment may be altering their life for the long term. As the child grows up with these constant fears and problems, their emotional and mental health may be compromised in a way that impacts their schooling, self-confidence, social development, and overall health and well being. The entire family has a role to play in the recovery and healing process.

CPCAN and The Exchange Club of Jackson, in continuing with ACE’s purview, are proud to present an educational training for the professional community on the Impact of the Opioid Crisis on Families. When a family member has a drug addiction, they have a disease that has the power to affect and hurt their entire family. It is clear that the negative repercussions of addiction within a family can linger for many generations. Nationally, parental substance abuse was a factor in one-third of all children entering foster care in 2016, and the number has increased by ten percent in the last three years. In February 2019 Michigan had 13,489 Foster Care Cases. This event will feature presenters from several sectors in our community, including the court system, medical and mental health fields, who will provide information about how the Opioid Crisis is impacting the community, local agencies, and families. Presenters will also provide information about what they are doing to address the crisis. Through discussions and break out groups we will identify gaps in services and resources in our community and formulate a course of action.
