Jackson Symphony Orchestra’s Concert: Virtuosity – Jackson

Saturday, May 3, 2014
7:30-9:30 PM
Jackson College’s Potter Center
2111 Emmons Rd, Jackson, MI 49201

Ralph Votapek, the first winner of the Van Cliburn Piano Competition, returns to Jackson to perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto #3, the same piece that launched his most prestigious international career.

The evening will also feature our own Artist Specialist In Residence, Rick Sherman, in the world premiere of Marjan Helms’ Seven Ascents for Flute and Orchestra. Seven Ascents for Flute and Orchestra is a concerto in seven movements, which mirrors the questioning and seeking character in a life journey of spiritual exploration. The interconnected movements evolve organically from beginning to end in hauntingly beautiful melodies, fresh harmonic language, and colorful orchestration to create a work of powerful vision and optimism. Appealing to audiences and performers alike, the music of composer Marjan Helms is known for its emotional eloquence and depth. This new work, created specifically for the sensitive virtuosity of flutist Richard Sherman, is certain to become a standard in repertoire.

The concert is preceded by the Backstage Glimpse, a free educational and entertaining presentation with Dr. Bruce Brown, 6:30 p.m. in the Federer Room at Jackson College.
