Cancelled for 2020
Two longtime annual events are canceled for 2020 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The City of Jackson Human Relations Commission (HRC) recently made the difficult decision to cancel its two remaining events for the year, the Back to School Blast and the Harold White Sr. Awards Breakfast.
The HRC decided to cancel the public events at their meeting on Wednesday, July 15. The Back to School Blast is an annual event that brings thousands of families to Downtown Jackson for a community resource fair, which includes free school supplies, health screenings, and connections to local resources. This year’s event was slated for Aug. 13.
The Harold White Sr. Awards Breakfast is an annual event that’s held in the fall. It brings together hundreds of community members for a sit-down breakfast that honors residents and leaders who have promoted diversity, inclusion and volunteerism.
HRC Chairperson Cheryl Ragland says the commission will make determinations about future public events next year. “These events really help connect the HRC to the community, and canceling them was a difficult decision. But to protect public health, and to further prevent the spread of COVID-19, we decided it would be best for the community to cancel these events,” Ragland said.
