Paul Keller at Sundown Quartet performs at the Jackson Symphony Guild’s Night of Jazz and Blues on April 26

Nicknamed “House Bassist for the State of Michigan” because of the many miles he logs every year traveling to jazz performances across Michigan, as well as the United States, Paul Keller shares his joy of music making in both performance and instruction.  He is joined by vocalist and clarinetist Sarah D’Angelo, pianist Glenn Tucker, and saxophonist Bobby Streng for this year’s event from 7:30-10:30 p.m. April 26 at the Country Club of Jackson, 3135 Horton Rd., Jackson.

Paul Keller is a longtime pillar of the local jazz scene. His label, PKO Records, has produced his own albums as well as recordings by other notable local jazz musicians. In addition, Keller has played as a side man on more than 60 albums by other acts, including major names like Diana Krall.

This talented group of Michigan-based jazz performers are dedicated to entertaining and delighting audiences of all ages with their personalized brand of high-energy jazz and swing. Their repertoire includes familiar and fun material from the Great American Songbook, well-known compositions from the “Giants of Jazz” like Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk, and a few slightly obscure tunes from the yester-years. Keller includes in each of his performances a few tunes from his popular CDs: Swingin’ The Praise Jazz/Gospel, A Toast To Nat King Cole Trio: WE LIKE TO RIFF and Keller’s magnum opus The Michigan Jazz Suite. They will also be debuting their new CD “At Sundown” on the 26th. The Paul Keller at Sundown Quartet enjoys building connections with young musicians and inspiring the next generation of jazz lovers through education, mentoring and inclusion.
