School Libraries in the Future

With funding shortages, school libraries and librarians are often threatened with budget cuts and even elimination. Heather Albee-Scott, Monica Lester and Calvin Battles  will share successes and a vision for rebirth in public school libraries. The Forum will take place on Thursday, May 16 at the Carnegie Library auditorium in downtown Jackson from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Monica Lester and Calvin Battles are employed by Jackson District Library(JDL). JDL contracts with Jackson Public Schools to staff two libraries: Calvin at the Middle School at Parkside, and Monica at Jackson High School. Heather Albee Scott’s interest in the Parkside Library began as a concerned parent: she started a parent group in response to concern over the lack of a library, worked with JDL to gain expertise, and planned an enhanced collection with an active, professionally staffed library. Conversations between JDL and JPS took place over a year to plan school library staffing. Heather is a member of the Jackson District Library Board of Trustees, a volunteer at the Parkside library, and is employed at Jackson Public Schools as parent liaison.

All forums are held at the JDL Carnegie Branch, 244 West Michigan Ave., Jackson, MI, usually on the third Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 pm. Childcare may be available for a modest donation: call 817-0940 to RSVP for childcare. Call Debby Sears at the library at 517-788-4087 ext. 234 for more information or see the JDL website at www.myjdl.com.
