State Rep. Mike Shirkey is sponsoring two radon awareness town hall events on Aug. 21-22 in Jackson County to give local residents the chance to learn more about the health risks associated with elevated indoor radon levels and ways to protect themselves and their families. Jackson County is one of nine counties in Michigan with the highest potential for elevated radon levels, according to the federal government.  The town halls take place at the Super 8 Brooklyn, 419 S. Main St., Brooklyn, from 5-7 p.m. on Aug. 21; and at the Blackman Charter Township Hall, 1990 W. Parnall Road, Blackman Township, from 5-7 p.m. on Aug. 22.

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., accounting for more than 20,000 deaths per year.  Jackson County has been designated as a Zone 1 county, which means it has the highest potential for elevated radon levels. The Michigan Indoor Radon Program in conjunction with the Jackson County Health Department also will provide 100 free radon test kits to event attendees.

People do not need to RSVP.  For more information, contact Shirkey’s office at (517) 373-1775, or e-mail him at MikeShirkey@house.mi.gov.
