Come to the Leslie Science & Nature Center for family-friendly, nature-oriented music performed by a well-loved local artist, and help raise funds to make LSNC’s environmental education programs available to children with limited resources! We’ve created a program spanning lunchtime in order to invite families and friends to visit us, dance, have a picnic, explore our Critter House, and marvel at our educational birds of prey. Our site is beautiful this time of year, and we’ll be ready to tell you more about our programs and how we strive to serve as a resource for our community, accessible to all. Join us for this event Saturday, July 13, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Leslie Science & Nature Center, 1831 Traver Road, Ann Arbor, MI, 48105.
At Leslie Science & Nature Center, we believe that hands-on, inquiry-based science learning is a vital part of education, and we feel that our role in local education is more crucial now than ever before, as local school systems face ever-smaller budgets and cuts to Title 1 funding. As a non-profit, we endeavor to keep per-student and per-camper costs as low as possible, but some schools still find our prices out of their reach. In many cases, just a few dollars can make the difference for a classroom full of young learners, allowing us to help them out with transportation costs, rate discounts, and sometimes even full scholarships!
We’re very happy to have the support of Joe Reilly in our efforts, as a proponent of nature-based education, a member of our community, and a long-time friend. Joe Reilly is a singer, songwriter and environmental educator from Ann Arbor. His way of working with children is empowering, inspiring, and educational. Offering an interactive musical program for students grades K-6 that teaches ecology and environmental science, Joe makes learning fun for all ages! Joe says he recognizes that he does not write his songs alone, but that the water of the Great Lakes, the nutrients of Michigan soils, and the rhythms of the Midwestern seasons all support him in his creative vocation. When you listen to Joe’s songs, you not only hear all of these natural influences but you also gain an experience of walking along a well-worn forest path that opens up to a beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline. In the musical ecosystem of Joe Reilly, all species are respected and celebrated for the special and important role they play in holding together the inextricable interconnection of life! This strong connection to place resonates strongly with us here at Leslie Science & Nature Center, and we know the community we serve will feel the same way.
The music starts at 11:00 a.m., but guests are welcome to stay and enjoy our site all day. From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., we’re happy to announce that Cheese Dream and Mity Nice Italian Ice, both food carts and local businesses with a commitment to giving back to the community, will be onsite, making it possible to choose between planning ahead and packing a picnic, or buying a delicious grilled cheese, a fresh lemonade, and a refreshing Italian ice on the spot. Our Critter House will be open until 3:00 p.m., and our Raptor Enclosures will also be ready for visitors.
