The City of Jackson Public Works-Water and Summit Township DPW will begin their Spring fire hydrant flushing programs on Monday, April 22, 2013. This semi-annual hydrant flushing is necessary to wash iron and other sediment out of the water mains. This sediment does not affect water quality, but can cause the water to become discolored. The water is safe to drink and the discoloration often disappears within a short time. Motorists are urged to slow down where flushing is taking place and to exercise caution, as children are attracted to open fire hydrants. Residents are also advised not to wash clothing while lines are being flushed in or around their neighborhoods. In addition, it is always advisable to check the color of the water before doing any laundry.

City crews will start in the southwest section of the city and end in the northeast section approximately three weeks later. Flushing will be done from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Log onto www.cityofjackson.org to see a map with approximate dates throughout the city.

Summit Township: Flushing will begin Monday, April 22, taking approximately three weeks to finish.

Spring Arbor: Summit flushing crews will begin on Monday, April 29, finishing approximately May 3.

Napoleon: Napoleon/Summit flushing crews will begin on Monday, May 13, finishing approximately May 17.
