Study seeks key to staying cancer-free
American Cancer Society enlists support of local residents
WHAT: The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers to join the fight against cancer by enrolling in its Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). The Society hopes to enroll about 500 Mid-Michigan residents in early May. CPS-3 is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Americans to participate in lifesaving cancer research. Studies of this magnitude only come around every 20-30 years. This will be the final opportunity to enroll in the Lansing and Jackson areas before enrollment closes December 2013. Today, everyone knows that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer. Few realize that it took three years, 22,000 volunteers, and 188,000 study participants to prove it through Cancer Prevention Study-1.
WHO: Anyone between the ages of 30-65 who has never had cancer and willing to commit to a long-term study.
WHERE &: Cancer Prevention Study-3 enrollment will take place at the following locations/times:
General Motors- Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant (Visitors Center)
8175 Millett Highway, Lansing
Wednesday, May 15, 6:30 a.m.-9 a.m. & 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
HOW: Walk-ins are welcome, however the American Cancer Society recommends making an appointment by calling 1-888-604-5888 or visiting cancer.org/midmicps3.
During enrollment, individuals provide a waist measurement, give a small blood sample, and complete a comprehensive survey online or at the enrollment site. Over the course of the 20-30 year study, participants will be asked to fill out follow-up surveys every few years.
WHY: Mid-Michigan residents have a remarkable opportunity to join the movement to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by participating in Cancer Prevention Study-3, a historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations. By enrolling in the study, participants will help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer, which ultimately will save lives. The study will enroll a diverse population of 300,000 people across the United States.
Photo opportunities include:
