The Administrator/Controller’s Office is pleased to announce that Jackson County has been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its 2013 Budget. According to the award letter from the GFOA, the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award “reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.”
Jackson County’s budget was evaluated separately by three independent reviewers on 27 specific criteria, grouped into four basic categories, which are a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device. The organizations budget must be rated either proficient or outstanding by at least two of the three reviewers in the four basic categories and 14 mandatory criteria.
Jackson County has received this recognition for the third consecutive year. In 2011 1,329 local governments received this recognition out of 89,004 units of government. Only 36 Michigan local governments received this recognition in 2012, 7 of which were counties.
The recognition of this award is a combination of fiscally sound practices by the Board of Commissioners and staff efforts to pursue best practices and promote accountability to the public. The budget can be viewed at http://www.co.jackson.mi.us/county_info/budget_2013.asp.
